FOUNDERS
Betty and Dennis Nielsen of Fonda, IA founded Freedom Quilts in 2001. Betty’s initial vision was to make five quilts in honor of the victims of September 11th. This modest vision quickly grew. Before long, Betty set out to make a quilt in honor of every 9-11 victim.
Today, Betty leads Freedom Quilts’ expanded mission of comforting families of fallen soldiers. She devotes time and attention to each and every quilt. Betty does her research and visits with families to find out as much as she can about their loved ones. Photos are transferred onto fabric by Dennis and incorporated into quilts for a special touch.
“These quilts are coming from the heart.” — Betty Nielsen
VOLUNTEERS
Freedom Quilts is sustained through the hard work and commitment of volunteers. Our volunteers dedicate approximately 80 – 100 hours of work and attention to create each unique, personalized Freedom Quilt. It is because of their devotion, their amazing hearts of gold and their dedication that we can continue to make quilts to comfort family members.
Our sincerest thanks to all Freedom Quilts volunteers!
