Sgt James Witkowski, 32, of Surprise, Arizona was assigned to the 729th Transportation Company, Army Reserve, Fresno, California. He was Killed in Action on October 26th, 2005 during Operation Iraqi Freedom near Ashraf, Iraq.. His vehicle convoy encountered a complex enemy attack. Ultimately, he sacrificed his own life by absorbing the shock of a hand grenade thrown at his vehicle, saving the lives of his fellow Soldiers. For his actions he was award our country’s second highest award, The Silver Star.
